AN ASCA STUDY OF THE COMPOSITE SUPERNOVA REMNANT G18.95-1.1 NASA Grant NAGS-8394 Final Report Forthe Period15 March 1999through 14March 2000 Principal Investigator We present an analysis of data from the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) of the supernova remnant (SNR) G18.95-1.1. We find that G18.95-1.1 can be classified as ``thermal composite'', characterized a thermal X-ray spectrum coupled with a centrally-bright morphology. In particular more work is needed in the physical implications of the results of the spectral analysis and in the comparison with theoretical models to understand the curious morphology of the remnant. The project should be completed within the next two months. Attachment: "ASCA study of the centrally-peaked thermal supernova remnant: G18.95-1.1". This is the final report on the work done on Supernova Remnant (snr) G18-95-1.1.… compare - Abstract We present the ASCA study of the Supernova Remnant (SNR) G18.95-1.1 as part of an ongoing study on composite SNRs. A radio map of G18.95-1.1 obtained Furst, Reich & Aschenbach (1997) shows a distinct central bar, polarized with a flat spectral index (0.22+/-0.07) surrounded a shell of diffuse emission. HI spectra of the supernova remnant G18.9-1.1 and the supernova remnant candidate G28.6+0.0 are analyzed. We compared the spectra to 13 CO emission spectra and to spectra of HII regions in the area to determine kinematic distances. G18.9-1.1 is at 2.1 ± 0.4 kpc and G28.6+0.0 is at 9.0 ± … Using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, we have pinpointed the location of a faint X-ray point source (CXOU J182913.1-125113) and an associated diffuse nebula in the composite supernova remnant (SNR) G18.95-1.1.These objects appear to be the long-sought pulsar and its wind nebula.
